On July 16, the Wuhan Children's Hospital received the application for hospital transfer. After reviewing the case, a group of experts, including those specializing in cardiothoracic and cardiovascular diseases, came to the same conclusion: That the patient had been in critical condition, that heart failure emerged due to multiple pulmonary infections and he was in need of operations as soon as possible. A hospital transfer became imperative.
The distance from Enshi to Wuhan exceeds 500 kilometers. It would take at least eight hours for an ambulance to cover the distance, but a faster high-speed train or passenger plane couldn't be loaded with the medical equipment necessary to keep the baby alive during transport.
