A spokesman for the mainland Taiwan affairs authority on Tuesday strongly condemned the visit to the United States of Lai Ching-te, the incoming deputy leader of Taiwan.

Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Tuesday, that the one-China principle is the fundamental premise and political foundation for China's relations with all countries, including the US.

Countries having diplomatic relations with China shouldn't have any form of official exchanges with the Taiwan region, Ma said, urging the US to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiques between China and the US.

He condemned the Democratic Progressive Party, the ruling party of the island, saying that, "'Taiwan independence' is against the historical trend and will end in a blind alley."

"Any person or force who is slavishly dependent on others, thinking this may bring some recognition, will be doomed to failure," he added.

Lai was the running mate of Tsai Ing-wen of the DPP who was re-elected as the island's leader in January. Lai will take office as the island's deputy leader in May. He started his visit in the US on Sunday.
