Report: 15 Chinese universities among global top 100
A total of 15 Chinese universities have made it to the top 100 of the 2025–2026 Best Global Universities rankings, up from 13 last year, according to data released Tuesday by US News & World Report.
Tsinghua University leads all Asian institutions, ranking No 11 globally and standing as the only Chinese university in the global top 20. Peking University follows closely at No 25.
Other Chinese universities landing in the global top 50 include the Chinese University of Hong Kong (No 37), University of Hong Kong (No 44), Zhejiang University (No 45) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (No 46).
The latest edition shows China topped the overall rankings with 397 universities, followed by the US with 280, India with 118, Japan with 104 and the United Kingdom with 93.
Other Chinese institutions in the top 100 include City University of Hong Kong and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (both at No 54), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (No 58), Fudan University (No 70) and the University of Science and Technology of China (No 71).
The annual rankings assess 2,250 universities across 105 countries and regions based on more than a dozen indicators, including global and regional research reputation, publications, books, conferences, normalized citation impact, and international collaboration.
"The Best Global Universities rankings provide valuable benchmarks for students considering international study options or seeking institutions with a strong global research impact," said LaMont Jones, managing editor for Education at US News.
