The Ziquejie Terraces originate from the Qin (221-206 BC) and Han (206 BC-AD 220) dynasties.
The terraces have been recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and they appear on the World List of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage as a unique type of agricultural irrigation.
Covering more than 5,000 hectares, the Ziquejie Terraces are built on hills with a height of 500 to 1,200 meters and a slope of 30 to 50 degrees.
