Lady M, a reimagined musical version of Shakespeare's Macbeth, returned to Shanghai for its third run on Sunday, featuring an international cast from a number of countries.

The production, performed at Shanghai's MIFA 1862 Theater, reframes the classic tragedy through Lady Macbeth's perspective, chronicling how prophecies and ambition drive her husband to murder King Duncan for the Scottish throne, leading to their shared descent into paranoia and destruction.

Written and composed by British musical theater artists James Beeny and Gina Georgio, and directed by Chinese director Xu Jun, the musical combines contemporary Western pop music styles with innovative storytelling techniques.

The title role alternates between veteran Dutch musical actress Maya Hakvoort and West End star Kerry Ellis. Chinese musical theater veterans Xu Lidong and Miao Mengchu complete the roster of performers portraying Lady Macbeth.

In the role of Macbeth, Italian performer Gian Marco Schiaretti, recognized for his Notre-Dame de Paris performance at China's CCTV Spring Festival Gala in 2024, is making his production debut. He alternates with Karl Queensborough, known for his portrayal of Alexander Hamilton in London's West End, and Chinese actors He Liangchen and Hu Chaozheng.

The international ensemble is further strengthened by West End performers Richard Carson as Macduff and Tom Hier as Banquo, alongside a company of more than 20 young Chinese performers in various roles, including Xu Zehui and Wang Zhiwei alternating as Macduff.

The production features an immersive staging that transcends traditional theatrical boundaries. It will allow audiences to view the performance from multiple angles, offering different perspectives on the unfolding drama, while futuristic costumes and character designs enhance the immersive experience.

Lady M will run at the MIFA 1862 Theater until Sept 14.
