Shanghai Jiao Tong Uni fosters collaborative research through China-Oceania forum

Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Institute of Regional and Country Studies hosted the 2025 China-Oceania High-Quality Cooperation Development Forum, where experts discussed collaborative research and the development of a knowledge system in the fields of science and humanities related to Oceania.
Scholars from renowned universities and research institutions across the country participated in the forum.
In recent years, China and Oceania countries have witnessed deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, culture, education, technology and environmental protection.
This forum aimed to promote resource sharing and collaborative innovation, fostering a research model that integrates regional studies with professional expertise and foreign language proficiency. The goals are to strengthen the explanatory, theoretical and policy-oriented foundations of Oceania studies in China, while addressing current priorities and advancing Chinese research on Oceania to higher levels of excellence and influence, according to the institute.
Uniting more than 10 prominent Chinese universities and key research institutes to create an interdisciplinary, cross-institutional academic collaboration platform, SJTU spearheaded the formation of the China joint center of research on Oceania.
During the event, the center unveiled an initiative for high-quality cooperation in Oceania research.
The initiative outlined several key objectives, including comprehensive coverage of all fields, focusing on both Oceania's role in the global context and the region's internal diversity and complexity.
Additionally, the initiative emphasized practical experience in Oceania research, actively addressing significant theoretical and real-world issues. It seeks to deepen multidisciplinary research and enhance the transformation of academic papers, research projects, and policy recommendations into tangible outcomes.
