A teacher from the South China University of Technology (SCUT) School of Arts, surnamed Jin, has been identified as the driver responsible for a traffic accident which claimed the life of one student on campus on Saturday.

According to a statement released by the university on Monday, the car crash killed one student and left another injured, who has since been discharged from hospital after receiving medical treatment.

The university expressed profound grief and self-blame, in the statement, pledging full cooperation with police authorities to ascertain the facts of the incident and ensure that the driver faces severe punishment in accordance with the law.

The university also offered its deep condolences to the family of the deceased student and stated that it would focus on providing comfort to the family, supporting the recovery of the injured student, and offering psychological counseling to affected students.

It added that the accident has exposed serious shortcomings in the university's safety management protocols, vowing to learn from the tragedy and comprehensively strengthening campus safety. Measures announced include a full inspection and rectification of potential safety hazards, improvements to road traffic safety infrastructure, stricter enforcement of speed limits for motor vehicles and electric bicycles on campus, and enhanced safety education for all staff and students.
