A master class held as part of Tianjin Juilliard's precollege outreach program took place in Beijing on Sunday. Horn instructor Wen Yang and trumpet faculty member Sergey Tyuteykin offered master classes to brass students recruited online, providing in-depth, yet accessible guidance on topics like repertoire interpretation, performance techniques, and musical expression.

Since Dec 14, the Tianjin Juilliard's precollege outreach program series has held three events focusing on vocal, string, and brass performances. These master classes and sharing sessions have been led by the college's distinguished faculty, with precollege students presenting outstanding concerts.

This marks the first time the precollege department has expanded beyond Tianjin, bringing international educational resources and artistic experiences to young music students and art enthusiasts in Beijing, while also creating more performance opportunities for its own students. Nearly 500 audience members have attended the series so far.

During the master class, 11-year-old horn student Zhao Shicheng performed the first movement of Mozart's Horn Concerto No 3 in E-flat Major. Wen, the instructor, encouraged Shicheng to listen more closely and practice alongside the piano. He stressed the importance of developing sensitivity to harmonies and musical nuances, suggesting that the student could use online accompaniments to improve his rehearsal experience. Wen also corrected Shicheng's horn positioning and teeth alignment to help him find the most natural tone production.
