Chinese photovoltaic giant Trina Solar announced on Monday that its self-developed TOPCon-compatible, Hybrid Back-contact Cell (THBC) achieved a maximum conversion efficiency of 28 percent — a record high.

The breakthrough, independently certified by the Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH) in Germany, marks the first time the industry has broken the 28 percent efficiency bottleneck on 210R large-area cells, setting a new benchmark for crystalline silicon cell efficiency.

Driven by its commitment to continuous technological innovation, Trina Solar has set or broken photovoltaic world records 39 times to date.

According to the company, the application of the new THBC cell will deliver higher front efficiency and superior power generation performance. The technology is specifically designed to meet the demands of the high-value distributed rooftop market, where it is expected to realize a significant premium.

Gao Jifan, chairman and CEO of Trina Solar, said the company will establish a new paradigm of technological leadership driven by a dual-engine strategy of TOPCon plus THBC.

Gao added that the company will rapidly advance the comprehensive industrialization of THBC technology in single-sided power generation scenarios, leveraging its superior front-power advantages to create greater value for customers.
