Ordos selected as key city for China's 5G initiative

Updated: 2026-05-07 (chinadaily.com.cn) Print

Ordos in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region has been listed as a key city in China's 5G application initiative for 2025. This recognition marks national-level approval of the city's 5G development and signals its transition into large-scale, high-quality application of next-generation connectivity.

Ordos has advanced new-type industrialization in recent years, focusing on smart, green, and integrated development, strengthening digital infrastructure, promoting industrial digital transformation, and activating innovation across its modern industrial system.

A series of supportive policies, including 5G development plans and base station subsidy measures, has helped build a coordinated framework driven by government guidance, financial incentives, and enterprise participation.

Ordos currently has roughly 46 5G base stations per 10,000 people – higher than regional and national averages – and has achieved full 5G coverage in all industrial parks. The city has also been recognized as a national "Gigabit City" and a pilot city for intelligent-connected vehicle applications.

The city will further implement national strategies for scaled 5G deployment, deepen integration with artificial intelligence and industrial internet technologies, and develop benchmark applications in areas such as smart manufacturing and vehicle-road coordination, supporting the growth of its digital economy.
