BEIJING - Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi will speak about China's views on major international issues when the annual General Debate of the UN General Assembly opens next week.

Yang will lead a delegation to the General Debate and deliver a speech, according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu at a press briefing on Friday.

The 66th session of the General Assembly will take place at UN headquarters in New York from September 21 to 30.

"Yang will elaborate on China's views and proposals on the current international situation and major international and regional issues," Jiang said, adding that Yang will introduce China's efforts to safeguard world peace and promote common development.

Jiang said a string of multilateral meetings will take place on the sidelines of the General Debate, including a high-level meeting on Libya, a global anti-terrorism forum, a meeting of foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), and a ministerial meeting on the famine-affected Horn of Africa.

The General Assembly is the primary deliberating organ. At the beginning of each regular session, the General Assembly holds a general debate, often addressed by leaders of state and government, in which member states express their views on the most pressing international issues.
