Nation's largest stem cell database

About 29,000 local volunteers
have registered with the Shanghai Red Cross Association to donate their stem
cells since 1997. The Shanghai Stem Cell Donor's Database is now the largest on
the Chinese mainland.
About 72 patients from outside Shanghai have found matching stem cells from
among the donations, and 21 have undergone successful transplant surgery.
The Red Cross is encouraging more people to donate, anticipating 60,000 to
80,000 volunteers by 2008. Another stem cell bank specializing in collecting
umbilical cord blood is under construction.
