China's power generating capacity tops 400m kw
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2004-08-07 13:12

By the end of May, China's total power generating capacity reached 400.6 million kw, exceeding 400 million kw for the first time, according to the State Power Regulatory Commission.

Another 500 million kw must be added in the next 15 years, in order to meet the demand.

In April 2000, China's power generating capacity surpassed 300 million kw.

This year, electricity consumption in peak time leaves a 30 million kw gap, causing severe power shortages in many parts of the country, especially in the economically developed coastal provinces and cities.

By the end of this year, newly-installed generators with a total capacity of 30 million kw are expected to be operational, which may ease the nationwide power shortage.
