知識(shí)分子

intellectual是“知識(shí)分子”，the intellectuals是指某時(shí)某地的一切知識(shí)分子。作形容詞用時(shí)intellectual和intelligent不同，intellectual比intelligent高，人類(lèi)以外的動(dòng)物可能intelligent，但只有人類(lèi)才可能intellectual。猴子會(huì)做戲，表示intelligent，卻并不表示intellectual。人會(huì)寫(xiě)字或算賬，表示intelligent，也并不表示intellectual。人會(huì)創(chuàng)作文藝或掌握高等數(shù)學(xué)、做科學(xué)研究，才表示intellectual。一個(gè)人只要不是呆子，就可以稱(chēng)他（或她）intelligent，卻未必intellectual。

文學(xué)家

我們習(xí)慣上常用writer或literati來(lái)表示“文學(xué)家”，其實(shí)man of letters也是一個(gè)用得很多的表達(dá)。letters常用來(lái)表示“文學(xué)；文化修養(yǎng)，學(xué)問(wèn)；寫(xiě)作生涯，作家職業(yè)”，它的習(xí)慣搭配有以下幾種：

（動(dòng)詞+）：forsake letters for politics

（形容詞/名詞+）：His death is a loss to Irish letters. / the language of polite letters

（介詞+）：He has become famous in the world of letters.

（其他）：art(s) and letters

不用說(shuō)

與it goes without saying一樣，needless to say（或add）也表示“不用說(shuō)，不必說(shuō)，不待說(shuō)”。

如：

Needless to say, I agree. 不用說(shuō)，我是同意的。

當(dāng)然還可以有如下表達(dá)：

Even two people cannot lift the box, not mention one person.

不用說(shuō)一個(gè)人，兩個(gè)人也抬不起這個(gè)箱子。

險(xiǎn)的

我們常用nearly表示“險(xiǎn)些，差點(diǎn)兒”。如：

nearly fall into the water

險(xiǎn)些掉到水里

I nearly missed the train.

我險(xiǎn)些兒沒(méi)趕上火車(chē)。

但nearly不可修飾否定的詞，如不可說(shuō)： Nearly no one believed her. （幾乎沒(méi)有人相信她。）

在上面這句話(huà)里，我們應(yīng)該把nearly改作almost。almost常與no，none，nothing，never連用，表示“幾乎沒(méi)有，幾乎不”等。這種時(shí)候，almost不能改用nearly。如：

The old lady almost never goes outside in the winter.

這個(gè)老太太冬天幾乎從不外出。
