The Shanghai Anti-Doping Laboratory (SAL) at Shanghai University of Sport received its official accreditation from the World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA, on Tuesday, becoming the second WADA-accredited anti-doping laboratory in China.

With this decision announced at a WADA executive committee meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea, China became the fourth country to host two WADA-accredited laboratories after the United States, Germany and Spain. The first accredited laboratory in the country is the Beijing Anti-Doping Laboratory.

The Shanghai lab entered the WADA candidate laboratory phase in September 2021 and was admitted as a candidate laboratory for the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) in September 2023. In September 2024, it became a WADA probationary laboratory.

Looking ahead, the SAL said it will continue to operate in full compliance with WADA's international standard for laboratories, upholding scientific rigor and innovation. The laboratory will further strengthen its analytical capabilities and research development, contributing to the global fight against doping in sport and safeguarding athletes' rights as well as the fairness and integrity of competition.
