Chinese FM calls for strengthening of UN against 'law of the jungle'
Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday that it is high time to support, reinvigorate and strengthen the United Nations amid growing turbulence and escalating hotspot issues when meeting with President of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, in Beijing.
Wang noted that certain countries believe in a might makes right mentality, openly challenging the status and role of the UN, which pose severe challenges to the organization and multilateralism.
Amid such headwinds and undercurrents, Wang said that it is imperative to stay on the right path of unity and cooperation and not allow the "law of the jungle" to prevail.
In the face of power politics and bullying, efforts must also be made to uphold justice and equity, and not let bigger fists be the decisive factor, he said.
This year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of China's lawful seat in the UN.
China will firmly uphold the international system with the UN at its core, promote the common development of all countries through its own development, and contribute its good governance to global governance, Wang said.
He also commended the UN system for adhering to UNGA Resolution 2758, while expressing firm opposition to any remarks or moves that challenge the authority of the resolution.
Baerbock noted that the UN's 80-year journey shows that, in the face of evolving global challenges, no country, not even major powers, can address it alone.
Only by working together can all parties jointly tackle these challenges and achieve shared progress, she said.
Baerbock expressed hope that the implementation of the "UN80 Initiative" would serve as an opportunity to continue strengthening cooperation with China to advance the improvement of global governance, and jointly promote world peace and development.
